New Show Serves up a Potluck of Politics with a Gourmet Twist

On Thursday, October 4 at 7:00 a.m., “Live with Lori” debuted in more than 6 million homes across Florida on the popular Sun Sports Network, a Fox Sports affiliate. As the 2012 Presidential election approaches in November, a new Sun Sports morning show offers viewers a chance to hear from some of Florida’s most influential movers, shakers and policy makers as they cook up some gourmet favorite dishes.

Live with Lori is a cross between a Political News show and a Traditional Cooking show. Each week host Lori Halbert serves up a little “Political Food for Thought” as she interviews politicians from all across Florida, while teaching them how to prepare a delicious meal.
“This is not a show to promote any specific beliefs or agendas. It is a non-partisan show that will allow the public to come to their own conclusions about their elected officials, and to have a little fun learning a new recipe, and just maybe come away with a new flavor for politics and policy as they see that their elected officials for what they are, people.” Halbert said.

Lori Halbert, a former Indialantic, Florida, town council member who leaped into state politics for the first time to run for the Florida House in 2010, said the show was her chance to combine her two passions in a promising and surprising way and make public policy a little more palatable.

While nearly unseating incumbent John Tobia, coming within 1/2 percentage points, in her first foray into state politics, Lori knocked on thousands of doors and sat with voters at their own kitchen tables talking about important issues, and the experience is one that left her with a taste for politics and a hunger to share her passion.

“I have a passion for cooking. There is something very personal about preparing and sharing a meal with someone,” Halbert said. “And in these hurried times, there is also very little time to get vital news and information about some of our state and our country’s most pressing issues.
“Live with Lori”, debuted with Florida Senate President Mike Haridopolos and has hosted Florida U.S. Rep. Bill Posey, state senators and representatives and rapidly become a hit with audiences and policy makers across the state.

A Message from our host, Lori Halbert

My name is Lori Halbert and I’m the host and creator of Live with Lori, where we serve up a little “Political Food for Thought.” I’d like to tell you about my show, but before we get to where we’re going, you need to know what led me here.

A few years ago, I saw my hometown heading in what I knew was the wrong direction. So, I ran for Town Council where I helped change public policy.

I soon became indignant by the many inequities I saw in state and local public policies. So, I ran for State Representative. I lost, but the important part of the journey is what I learned along the way.

I learned that no one really listens to what politicians are saying from a podium or in campaign ads. When gathered for a speech, most people might listen for 5 minutes (10 if they’re really good listeners). This often is not be the fault of the speaker, it is simply human nature, and how people respond to the kind of abridged opinions and prepared speeches that are synonymous with politics today.

Anyone who’s ever given a speech can see it happen and knows the moment it does. You see in that instant that the crowds’ eyes glaze over waiting for you to finish, that you and your audience will never truly know each other, despite best intentions.

But as I walked door-to-door, and sat in the kitchens of people throughout my district, I saw how a meal and a laugh at the kitchen table relaxed many and gave them the courage to really get to know me.

So, who are the people writing the laws for our state, and our county? How do they feel about their service, their duty to us, the toll it takes on their families, their jobs and their lives?

It was with these questions in mind, I set myself to find a way to present an elected official in a manner in which everyone can relate, and to combine my love of cooking with what I learned in the kitchens across my district to present my audience with the real people who serve them in public office. Food is truly the “great uniter”. Everyone must eat, and someone must prepare it, so what better way to get to know someone than in the kitchen? I find this to be the perfect setting since the kitchen is the heart of the home, where families gather, take nourishment, and make their own decisions for their future.

This is not a show to promote my beliefs or my agenda. It is a non-partisan show that will allow a hungry public to draw their own conclusions about the real people who serve as their elected officials. Viewers will have a chance to learn a new recipe, and perhaps come away with a new taste for how their government works and realizing the person working for them in office is just like you and me, with hopes and dreams not that different from our own.
